My Pub(lic Relations)lishing Journey: The Surprising Connection between PR and Poetry

Posted on December 9, 2024

These days, public relations extends far beyond traditional press releases and launch events. It has evolved to include a diverse set of techniques that adapt to the rapidly changing landscape. The integration of both classic and modern communication strategies has become increasingly important across various media platforms and this blend of approaches has played a key role in my recent personal venture—the publication of my debut poetry collection.

This year, I was thrilled to have my manuscript accepted by Frontenac House Inc., a publishing house based in Okotoks, Alberta. Writing has been a constant cornerstone in my life, whether through crafting stories, diving into essays (nerd alert…) or curating press releases for clients. So, when I learned that my manuscript was selected for publication, I felt a profound sense of excitement. I quickly realized, however, that getting the book published was just the beginning of a much larger journey.

For first-time authors, it’s not enough to simply publish a book; ensuring it reaches the right audience by involving oneself in the literary community, fostering connections and sharing the ‘story behind the story’ all act as integral components to the success and longevity of the project. All of these steps truly circle back to the world of public relations – gaining exposure and visibility, telling an author’s story, building relationships with media and other authors and reputation management. These are all facets of public relations that are very much present in the day-to-day life of a public relations professional. In my case, I’ve been fortunate to merge my professional experience with this personal passion.

To make a long story short – public relations plays a crucial part in the publishing process. Today, just like in PR, the publishing industry is highly competitive. An author’s personal story often holds as much weight as the book itself. Building a personal brand and managing long-term relationships with media outlets, readers, and fellow authors helps sustain promotion and opens doors for collaboration and new opportunities. By being able to take a step back and place myself in the shoes of a client, I was able to hone in on the different facets of public relations that would lend a hand to the success of my publishing journey.

In the competitive world of publishing, public relations is an indispensable tool for any author. I am very fortunate to have the ability to leverage various aspects of the public relations world. It’s not just about promoting a book—it’s about crafting a narrative and establishing meaningful connections within the literary community.

Public relations has played a pivotal role in my poetry journey, helping to raise visibility, tell my story and foster lasting relationships. As I continue to grow professionally and personally, I realize that public relations is integral to creating a personal brand, sharing my unique perspective and building a network that supports my work long after the completion of a project – whether that be publication or otherwise. A strong PR strategy is not just a promotional tool; it’s essential for turning literary dreams into reality!
